It would be nice, if installation in /some/directory
would result
in the software being put into subdirectories thereof like

   bin
   lib/jython
   doc/jython

etc. This would make installation on UNIX like systems
less of
a copying-by-hand approach.

Our default installation probably isn't going to change much, though it
probably is a bit better compared to when this request was posted. 
These days almost all common *nix systems have some kind of installer
where the maintainers have broken them up to fit their standards, which
will likely fit the needs of most people that would want this.  We would
certainly look at a patch that altered the installer if someone wanted
to submit such a patch... but for now I'm closing this.
