I threw up my hands on this one.  The xml parser in java 1.4 is so crappy compared to the one in Java from 5 on and pyxml that it isn't worth working around it.  I just disabled the test_expat tests for java 1.4 in r3101.  If one wants to do the sorts of things tested by test_expat under java 1.4, they should be able to add a better java xml parser to their classpath and pass in its driver to create_java_parser, but I haven't tested this.
