Sorry, disregard previous messages. There was an old copy of jython.jar lying around in my $TOMCAT_HOME/lib directory, including a cachedir, that may have interfered with my previous tests. When I removed all copies of jython.jar and cachedir from $TOMCAT_HOME/lib and placed it back into the WEB-INF/lib directory, everything started working as normal, without error. Pending confirmation from others, I voted to close this issue as "Fixed".
